On the beam dynamics optimization problem

The new problem of the beam dynamics optimization is considered. The core of this problem is that the program control is a step function, in which the length of intervals depends on the function values at neighbor intervals. For example, this statement can appear to solve the simulation and optimization problem for alternating phase focusing accelerators (APF). To estimate the beam quality the integral functional is introduced. An analytical representation of the quality functional gradient by the control parameters is obtained, with necessary conditions of optimality being formulated. As an example of the proposed approach, the problem of improving the capture of particles into the acceleration mode and reduce the maximum radius of the beam is considered. Results of numerical optimization and simulation of 11.5 MeV alternating-phase focusing linac are discussed. The simulation results indicate the possibility of the successful application of this approach at APF linac design. Bibliogr. 15. Il. 2.
