On the theory of gas brake

The problem is considered of stopping a rigid body moving by inertia by means of a compressed gas enclosed in a cylindrical tube of finite length. Wave processes in a connecting rope are also taken into account. The equations of motion of gas particles and the rope are linearized and solved by the use of Laplace's integral transformation. The solution is obtained in the form of infinite trigonometric series. Approximate formulae are presented.
