This paper contains a historical survey of the Fortran programming language evolution. Some new features introduced in each next Fortran standard are considered. The tables of statements and intrinsic procedures in different Fortran standards (from Fortran 66 to Fortran 2003) are given. Information on Fortran compilers in the Soviet Union and on the prospects of Fortran further evolution is outlined.
Keywords: programming languages, standardization of programming languages, high performance computing, technologies of programming, object-oriented programming, parallel programming.
