This paper studies steady-state momentum and coordinate distributions of two-level atoms in a one-dimensional standing light wave of arbitrary intensity. The calculations are based on a quantum kinetic equation for the density matrix with a complete account of recoil effects. Under the strong field a fundamentally new effect is revealed. It consists in an anomalous localization of atoms, which tend to accumulate out of the minimums of optical potential.
