Methods and results of optical investigations of X-ray binary systems are described. Recent data on the masses of stellar-mass black holes are summarized. Some new results of demographic investigations of black holes are presented. These results allow us to study birth and evolution of black holes of different masses and reveal a connection between black holes and other objects in the Universe: stars, galaxies, etc.
