Zonal empirical model of stratosphere fundamental parameter variation is introduced. The model is based upon diurnal UK Met Office data on geopotential heights, temperature, zonal and meridional winds for 1992–2005 period both for northern and southern hemispheres. Dispersions calculated using the scatter in average time values and in average zonal values were used as variability measure. Analysis reveals that both time and space variabilities of each parameter have individual features that accord to physics of global circulation in atmosphere (troposphere and stratosphere). Quantitative prevalence of non-stationary processes in the upper atmosphere as related to the lower atmosphere was described. Discovered features of the stratosphere fundamental parameter fields' variability may serve as a base for a new reference model of the mid atmosphere at heights 10–55 km
Keywords: middle atmosphere, variability of thermodynamical fields, reference atmosphere.
