A microscopic approach to describing the transition of simple isotropic three-dimensional liquid into an anisotropic phase is suggested. Long-range behaviour of the correlation function of orientational fluctuations of the pair distribution function is analysed. Numerical estimate of instability points is given for systems of hard spheres and Lennard–Jones particles.
