Characterization of wave solutions of the Einstein equations is carried out with the help of an additional condition for a certain type of the dependence of the fundamental tensor upon space-time variables. In the case of plane gravitational waves the Einstein equations are reduced to the Riccatti equation. Both the superposition of gravitational waves and solitary waves are considered.
