Tunneling transitions between topologically distinct vacua are considered in the theory of gauge fields interacting with fermions. Using the technique of non-unitary Bogoliubov transformations it is shown that the creation of fermions occurs at the tunneling transitions which leads to nonconservation of fermion quantum numbers due to the triangle anomaly.
