A study is made of spontaneous symmetry breaking by Higgs potentials formed by fundamental and, respectively, symmetric and antisymmetric representations of $SU(n)$, and also by the vector and antisymmetrie representations of $O(n)$. A partial study is made of the influence of the parameters of the potentials on the invarianee group of the vacuum.
