The one-dimensional Higgs model with external point sources is analyzed from the
point of view of catastrophe theory. The set of bifurcation points corresponds to
a set of catastrophes. On quantization, the presence in the solutions of bifurcations leads to a rearrangement of the vacuum. The stability of the solutions is also considered.
