Axioms of algebra of observables and the field concept

The most recent developments in the axiomatic algebraic approach to quantum field theory
are briefly reviewed. The algebraic description of relativistic quantum systems with
superselection rules is considered and the procedure, due to Doplicher, Haag, and
Roberts, for constructing quantized fields on the basis of the algebraic theory of local observables
is sketched.
