A method is proposed for constructing a rigorous canonical quantum field theory that takes into account the need to eliminate the ambiguity in the definition of quantities of the type $\overline{\psi}\gamma_\mu\psi$. This method is used to find the solution of the Thirring model in two-dimensional space time. The operators of the meson and fermlon fields and the electromagnetic current and the $S$-matrix are constructed In the Interaction representation. It is shown that all the Wightman axioms are satisfied in the Thirring model.
