The Alexander polynomial of~a~three-dimensional manifold

In this paper a relationship is established between the Alexander polynomial of the fundamental group of a compact three-dimensional manifold on the one hand and the Reidemeister torsion on the other. For manifolds with the homology of a circle and for complements of links in $S^3$ this relationship is well known (Milnor).
