This recollection of Rosario Strano has been written by two colleagues and strict friends of his, Silvio Greco, who was his first advisor after the degree, and Paolo Valabrega, whose papers in Commutative Algebra are close to his. The authors present almost without formulas the main results obtained by Strano on henselian rings, curves and their plane sections, focusing on his original approach, mainly based on a fine study of the syzygies, which reaches a variety of deep results concerning the Laudal Lemma, the curves that are complete intersections of two surfaces, the maximal genus of a curve. A few anecdotes concerning Strano's life show his humanity.
