The Grand Tour, or journey to Italy, which between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries played aspecial role in the experience of many great figures of European society and culture, also crosses the biographies of scientists and mathematicians. The article shows how a particularly important historical episode is inserted into this broader perspective. The episode is the discovery, by the great projective geometer Jakob Steiner, of what was later called Steiner's Roman surface. The discovery occurred during Steiner's stay in Rome and, as this article observes, it is an episode in a broader story, with the characteristics of a Grand Tour. Together with Steiner, it brought to Italy, from Berlin and with the support of Alexander von Humboldt, some other mathematicians of exceptional relevance. About this journey, several aspects and views are presented, in order to focus on the different historical, geometric and cultural aspects, hoping to encourage further developments.
