At the beginning of the 20th century, a harsh controversy broke out between Benedetto Croce (andGiovanni Gentile) on the one side and Federigo Enriques (and Francesco Severi) on the other. Among other things, Enriques advocated the wisdom value of mathematics (and more generally of science), which he consideredan essential tool for knowledge, while Croce completely denied this value, considering mathematics a mere technical tool to support the applied sciences. More than a century after that controversy, it can be said that Croce'spoint of view appears totally losing. This paper aims precisely at underlining this aspect, showing with some examples how mathematics is not reduced to a set of mere technical notions but consists of a profound cultural phenomenon which is capable of setting on solid foundations the knowledge of ideas and notions long-debated by historians, philosophers and epistemologists
