We first try to understand the extent of Calvino's mathematical knowledge, especially combinatorics, then we will focus on two pillars of Calvino's structuralist vision of literature on which he relied starting in the sixties of twentieth century, and which are analogous to two standard features of contemporary mathematics, the axiomatic method and formal proofs. Finally we will consider the creative role of myth, in mathematics and in thenatural sciences, if myth is defined as by Calvino, meaning the effort of getting over the limit of language to express concepts for which there aren't yet words available.
