In this work, we describe some of the fundamental steps in the history of the isoperimetric problem: starting from the first contributions in the ancient Greece, until its complete resolution in the XX century. We also address some possible generalizations of the classical problem to anisotropic structures, and their relation with the study of crystal shapes. Finally, we recall some recent results in the study of quantitative versions of the isoperimetric inequality and the connection between geometric inequalities and the theory of Optimal Transport.
