The publication of the Giornale di Matematiche started in Naples in 1863. The promoter of the initiative was Giuseppe Battaglini. The Giornale was mainly dedicated to the young scholars of Italian universities. It was meant to be a link between the university lectures and the new mathematical researches produced in Europe. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the editorial project of the Giornale and the role played by Battaglini and his pupils in its development.
