In this short paper, I have examined the algebraic work of Richard Dedekind and in particular, his theory of ideals and its use in number theory and algebraic geometry. I have also scrutinized the difficult reception of his innovative ideas in the mathematical milieu until the twenties of the 20th century, when Emmy Nöther and her school fully developed his algebraic ideas. I looked in particular at the inadequate diffusion of Dedekind's work in Italy. I have also shortly examined Dedekind's contributions to the theory of algebras (hypercomplex numbers).
