Dalla Géométrie al calcolo: il problema delle tangenti e le origini del calcolo infinitesimale

The article examines the events that led to the invention of calculus. In the period 1635-1684 two research programs develop, which eventually will merge into the calculus. On the one hand Descartes' Géométrie (1637) poses the general problem of drawing the tangent to a generic curve; a problem that will be tackled by various authors, most notably Fermat, and which will find its complete solution within the differential calculus. On the other hand Cavalieri's Geometria indivisibilium (1635) opens the way to deal in a general way the problem of the quadratures, which in turn will lead to the Newtonian method of infinite series. The paper concludes with a brief account of the priority dispute.
