The amount of organic matter in the bottom layer of Nemi lake has been estimated and it has been compared with the amount of organic matter in depositions. During the summer 1984 the organic and ash contents of bottom layer were determinated through the collection of 5 cm deep cores of bottom sediments on the same depth gradient used for depositions analyses. It results: 1) 53% is the mean efficiency in detritus recycling. Therefore almost a half of the settled organic materials is involved in the long term sediments cycles. 2) The origin and the amount of detritus standing crop in the superficial sediments vary with depth and distance offshore. 3) An elementary model, the large particulate organic matter (> 1 mm)/total amount ratio and the direct linear correlation observed between monthly deposition and phytoplanktonic densities support the hypothesis of a main autochthonous contribution to deposition in the deepest sampling site at lake center.
