Research has been carried out on histocompatibility in adult Triturus carnifex Laur. after allotransplantation of regenerating skin. Sixty-four throat skin transplants were made and each host simultaneously bore two allotransplants (one of normal skin, and the other of regenerating skin), both from the same donor. The histological appearance of the two types of transplant was observed 10, 20, 30, and 50 days after the operation. Although both the normal and the regenerating skin transplants were performed on the same host and were taken from the same individual, the histological patterns of the two types of transplant were not identical throughout the experiments. During the early phase and up to day 20 after transplantation the greater damage (particularly as far as the amount of lymphocyte infiltration and the morphology of the mucous and granulose glands are concerned) seemed to occur in the regenerating skin; from day 30 until the conclusion of the experiment, the histological patterns of the two types of transplant become almost identical. Since at the level of the epidermis of the skin regenerating after 45 days an intense proliferative activity was observed at the time of the transplant, the results could be attributed to the presence of a greater antigenic load vis-a-vis the host's lymphocyte response. This would give rise to a faster and stronger histocompatible reaction towards the regenerating skin than in the case of normal skin transplants, the epidermal proliferative activity of which is much lower at the time of the transplant.
