The various stages of spermiogenesis in the quail Coturnix coturnix have been studied by electron microscope. The acrosome origin and the various stages of the formation of the perforatium are described. During the shaping of the sperm head three stages of trasformation in the nucleus can be distinguished: a firt stage, with the nucleus irregularly twisted, a second stage, with a spiral manchette of microtubules elongating the nucleus; and a third stage with groups of longitudinal microtubules surrounding the nucleus. From the comparative data presented in this paper it can be concluded that the longitudinal microtubules are different from these of the helical manchette.
