The tension applied to the Posterior Wall of the trachea at different transmural pressures is estimated considering either the different radius of curvature of the posterior wall as predicted by the Laplace’s relationship (T = PR), or the direct stretching of the tips of the cartilages on the posterior wall according to the tension-length relationship (T = kL). The total tension is the sum of the two. The tension-transmural pressure curve is very similar to the static response of the receptors at different transmural pressures experimentally obtained. This finding confirms that the static response of tracheal stretch receptors is strictly related to the tension applied to the posterior wall of the trachea, in which they are uniquely located, and that their asymmetrical response to positive and negative transmural pressures is explainable considering the mechanical coupling between posterior wall and cartilages.
