The energy balance of the myocardium during anoxia following the arrest of the coronary circulation has been evaluated in dogs and in 5 men during surgery on the heart. L. A. may be produced in anoxia in much greater amounts, up to 30-40 mMoles/kg of tissue, by the myocardium than by the skeletal muscle when stimulated to exhaustion: this is related to its higher glycogen content. PC concentration in the heart of the animal at rest is only about 1/5 of the concentration of the resting skeletal muscle: therefore the energy that may be drawn from phosphagen is reduced correspondingly. The resistence to anoxia of the myocardium is sustained mainly by the high capacity of this tissue to build L. A.
