The stick insect Bacillus rossius (Rossi) reproduces by either amphigonyor facultative telitokous parthenogenesis. Some females however, even if mated with males, produce only feminine offspring, so behaving as obligatory parthenogenetic. Cytological investigations on early embryonic stages of progeny of such females show that development begins with cells containing the haploid or near-haploid number of chromosomes. Later on, the chromosome complement is doubled through an anaphasic restitution mechanism and afterwards only diploid or near-diploid cells survive a massive degeneration process which takes place on about the 15th day of development. Fertilized eggs of amphigonic females follow a normal developmental pattern, though blastoderm cells are mainly aneuploid. Aneuploidy poses a problem in regard to the chromosome number in both somatic and germinal cells during further development.
