The existence of MX5 intermetallic phases formed by Ca, Sr, Ba with VIII, IB, IIB group elements has been investigated for the following compositions: CaCo5, SrCo5, BaCo5, SrNi5, BaNi5, CaPd5, BaPd5, SrCu5, BaCu5, CaAg5, CaCd5, SrCd5, BaCd5. The results show the occurrence of the 1:5 compound only for SrCu5, and BaPd5, having the hexagonal CaCu5 structure type. A survey of all available data concerning the behaviour of Ca, Sr, Ba in the formation of 1:5 intermetallic compounds shows that the existence of MX5, phases with the CaCu5 structure type: a) is not exclusively influenced by the dimensional factor (atomic radii ratio); b) it seems related to the atomic structure of the partner element X, since it appears only for elements with complete (or nearly complete) d-levels.
