Systems of ordinary differential equations are often used in mathematics, to model experimental physical laws. In the case of systems of two equations and two unknowns, the solutions can be represented as families of curves, filling the plane; they form a picture, called the phase portrait. Looking at the geometric properties of these curves, it is possible to infer some information about the modelled application. By this article, we aim to show how phase portraits can be plotted on the screen of a computer, with the aid of an appropriate software package. This leads to discover many interesting mathematical features of the system dynamics, taking care at the same time of the esthetic aspects of the picture.
