At the beginning of the Sixties, in the framework of an Italian reform of Middle School, it was decided that the same teacher had to teach both mathematics and natural sciences. This decision was accompanied by a strong debate. The Editors of this Journal have decided to reprint two articles written in those years, respectively by Bruno de Finetti and Tullio Viola, where different theses are supported. This paper is an introduction and a comment to the two articles. After a short history of the Italian law regarding teaching in Middle School, the Authors' proposals are discussed, trying to point out what aspects are still relevant. Currently, this debate is of particular importance, because in Italy new structures for teacher training are coming into force.
