In the last decade the Rasch method has been applied to several quantitative researches in Education, especially with regards to standardized tests surveys. The main reason of the large application of the Rasch method is its capability to estimate, on the same scale, both the student ability and the difficulty of each item. This work describes the main features of the Rasch family models, starting from the basic model for dichotomous data introduced by Rasch in his seminal works in the early sixties. The main characteristics of the Rasch method with Item Response Theory are also compared. In particular, practical similarities and conceptual differences among the two methods are illustrated. The present paper also illustrates some examples of potentialities and limits of the Rasch method and its statistical models. In the end, an application of the Rasch method for the value added calculation in Education is described. The value added methods aim to measure the learning gains in a given period of time.
