The details of the life of Mario Pieri (1860-1913) reveal a gentle, modest man, devoted to family and scholarship. The focus of his professional life encompassed mathematics, philosophy and teaching. The appreciation, both historical and contemporary, of Pieri's legacy in these fields has been mixed. This article intends to open a window on the life and work of this important scholar. In addition to a short biography, it provides an overview of his research in algebraic and differential geometry; foundations of mathematics; and the philosophy of science. Among other things, it explores how his perspectives on mathematic education and logic permeated his research endeavors, notably in foundations. It is enriched with information shared by Pieri's surviving relatives.
