Résumé

Luigi Cremona is well known as one of the principal Italian mathematicians of the second half of the 19th century and as the founder of the Italian school of algebraic geometry. In this paper, using his large correspondence, we will treat other sides of his personality and his political and civil role (Cremona was also amember and vice-president of Italian senate). In particular we will examine his relations with the Cairoli family (principally with Benedetto and his mother Adelaide), with Carducci and Magni on the masonry, with Beltrami on the problem of the "Bologna's professors", (and among them Carducci) and the evolution of his political stands after his move to Rome. This paper is divided into two parts. In this first partwe speak mainly of the period in which Cremona worked in Bologna. In the second part we will speak about the evolution of Cremona's stand towards masonry, the "Carducci case", and the political situation following the completion of Italian unity.
