Matematica e organizzazione. Un capitolo della storia della matematica applicata

Questo articolo esamina l'evoluzione dello studio matematico dei problemi gestionali in ambito militare, amministrativo e industriale, attraverso l'analisi delle origini culturali della ricerca operativa. Oggi, a seconda dei paesi e del profilo degli studiosi, la ricerca operativa è considerata una branca della matematica applicata oppure un settore dell'economia o della gestione aziendale. In pochi decenni di impetuosa crescita la ricerca operativa ha tentato di mantenere un difficile equilibrio fra le attese applicative (in termini di soluzione pratica dei più svariati problemi organizzativi delle società industrializzate) e lo sviluppo di un corpus teorico, e nel contempo ha continuamente messo in discussione la propria identità e l'indirizzo delle ricerche. Le analisi storiche si perdono a volte nella disamina dei diversi contesti nazionali (inglese, statunitense, francese, russo), dei diversi filoni matematici (tecniche algebriche, ottimizzazione combinatoria, ritorno dell'ottimizzazione classica), dei diversi contesti applicativi (la guerra, l'evoluzione della gestione aziendale e dell'organizzazione industriale). La storiografia della matematica offre un quadronel quale comprendere la ricerca operativa come un progetto culturale che, come la biomatematica o l'economia matematica, ha le loro radici nelle concezioni illuministe di una razionalità matematica soggiacente a ogni fenomeno; come un progetto culturale tuttavia profondamente segnato dal dispiegamento della industrializzazione e dell'automazione; come un progetto culturale che ha tratto forza dallo sviluppo della modellistica e dalle trasformazioni della matematica all'inizio del Novecento.

Abstract

This paper considers the evolution of the mathematical study of management problems in the military, in industrial production systems and in bureaucracy, through the analysis of the cultural sources of operations research. OR is sometimes considered a branch of applied mathematics, or a synonymous of management science or of industrial engineering. In a few decades of impetous growth, OR has tried to maintain a balance between the expectations (a rational, ready answer to very complex problems in practice) and the systematic development of a theoretical corpus; and OR practitioners have often criticized the OR "ecosystem" and the current research trends. Historical studies of OR have considered several partial aspects, such as national contexts (English, American, French, Russian), mathematical techniques, application contexts (main characters and institutions in the military, in industry). History of mathematics offers a general cultural framework in which OR can be better understood as a cultural project that shares with biomathematics and mathematical economics a common root in the Enlightenment views of a mathematical rationality that can be found in natural phenomena or can be used to control human and social behaviour; as a cultural project typical of the 20th century as the age of a mathematical "systems approach"; as a cultural project that was stimulated by the development of mathematical modelling and by the new ideas of the early 20th century mathematics.
