The Principle of Virtual Velocities gives a characterization for the equilibrium configurations of a constrained mechanical system under the action of an assigned force. The origin of the Principle can be found in the work of Aristotle; in the next centuries it developes through the contributions of some medioeval scientists and of the founders of the modern Mechanics to arrive to its formulation with Johann Bernoulli. Thanks to Joseph Louis Lagrange the Principle of Virtual Velocities becomes the ground of the statics; its first proofs can be viewed as attempts to bring it back to some other more intuitive principle. In the context of the modern Rational Mechanics, the equilibrium conditions are determinated from the equations of the motion; therefore the Principle changes its status and becomes a theorem of mechanics.
