The first results of application of geographical information systems (GIS) in astronomy are presented. The complete digitization of specific cartographic material – star maps – is performed. The next steps are done: scanning of cartographic material, managing metadata, removing deformations of the scanned material, transferring data from the scanned material into a specific spatial data base, and, at the end, connecting recognized celestial objects to astronomical and bibliographical data bases existing on the Internet.
