Abstract. The Text Encoding Initiative's Guidelines
for electronic text encoding and interchange provide an extremely rich set
of mechanisms for the transcription of primary textual sources. The present
article presents a brief overview of some of the more important areas dealt with
in the Guidelines, with examples taken from the author's own work with
Old Norse and Early-Modern Icelandic
texts.
