Estimation from above of the period of a quadratic irrationality

The following result is established: let $l$ be the length of the period of a quadratic irrationality with discriminant $D>0$; then $l\ll D^{1/2+\varepsilon}$, where $\varepsilon$ is an arbitrarily small positive quantity.
