Dans les années 1930-1950, le débat opposant partisans de l'interprétation objectiviste et tenants de l'interprétation subjectiviste des probabilités mobilise un principe des probabilités négligeables, identifié par les auteurs comme «principe de Cournot», afin d'assurer la valeur objective du calcul des probabilités. Le but de l'article est de montrer que le principe tel qu'il est formulé par Cournot lui-même, et qu'on peut dénommer principe de l'impossibilité physique, ne se confond pas avec ce que les auteurs appelleront plus tard «principe de Cournot», puis d'en interroger le fondement et le statut, afin de mieux comprendre la façon originale dont Cournot confère au calcul des probabilités sa valeur objective.

Abstract

During the years 1930-1950, the argument opposing the partisans of the objectivistic interpretation of the probabilities and the supporters of its subjectivistic interpretation implies a principle of negligible probabilities (described by the authors as the principle of Cournot) in order to emphasize the objective meaning of the probabilities theory. The article first aims to demonstrate that, in fact, the principle identified by Cournot himself and which can be described as the principle of physical impossibility doesn't merge with what the authors will later call “principle of Cournot” ; and then to question its foundation and status in order to understand better the original manner in which Cournot endows the probability theory with its objective meaning.
