Developing communication competencies through university courses in mathematics

This paper is focused on the results of a two-year study on the potential for developing of soft skills within university mathematics courses. Without neglecting the main function of mathematics courses (developing mathematical knowledge and skills for problem-solving, analytical thinking, quantitative thinking, the ability to manipulate precise concepts and complex ideas, critical thinking, building logical circuits and finding false arguments), the authors are looking for the potential for the development of transferable soft skills and competencies such as: communication skills, creative thinking, teamwork, ability to communicate with other people, decision making, problem solving, personal traits, etc. The results of the study are analysed, and approaches used by the authors in their long-term practice for improving some aspects of the communication skills of the students are proposed. В доклада се разглеждат резултатите от двегодишно изследване върху потенциала, който обучението по висша математика в университетите има за развитието на меки умения. Без да се пренебрегва основната функция на курсовете по математика (развиване на математически знания и уменията за решаване на проблеми, аналитично мислене, количествено мислене, способност за манипулиране на точни концепции и сложни идеи, критично мислене, изграждане на логически вериги и откриване на фалшива аргументация), авторите търсят потенциала и за развитие на преносими меки умения и компетенции: комуникативни умения, креативно мислене, работа в екип, способност за общуване с други хора, вземане на решения, решаване на проблеми, лични черти на характера и др. Анализирани са резултати от проведените проучвания и са предложени подходи, използвани от авторите в тяхната многогодишна практика за подобряване на различни аспекти на комуникационните умения на обучаемите.
