This text is an introduction to the concept of degree formulae and some of their applications. A general definition of what we will refer to as degree formulae is provided and two examples of such formulae are stated: the so called level one and a more general one. Afterwards, we describe the components of such formulae, that is the numbers and the obstruction ideals. We will finish this text with a short discussion of the proof of the formulae and a section devoted to the explicit description of some algebraic varieties which can be studied by means of level one formulae.
