I fondamenti epistemologici della Relatività Generale e la sua «eredità matematica»

Si analizzano alcuni aspetti fondazionali della Relatività Generale dal punto di vista epistemologico, dando una particolare rilevanza al fatto che non ha più senso parlare di tempo durante il quale le dinamiche si svolgono, né di spazio in cui le dinamiche hanno luogo. La Relatività Generale afferma infatti l'identificazione tra spazio-tempo – che è una varietà metrica e dunque un'entità a priori non dinamica – e la materia – che soggiace ad equazioni differenziali ed è dunque un'entità dinamica – stabilendo in tal modo la non separabilità tra spazio-tempo e materia. Questo approccio di tipo relazionale alla descrizione del moto distingue la Relatività Generale dalla Meccanica Newtoniana, nella quale lo spazio e il tempo sono invece assoluti e dunque separabili dalla materia e dal moto. Ciò si traduce in Relatività in una perdita di significato fisico delle coordinate locali; il calcolo intrinseco sulle varietà, così come ogni approccio di tipo globale che sia indipendente dalla scelta o dal cambiamento di coordinate locali, è dunque il più adatto a descrivere questa teoria e rappresenta l'eredità matematica più importante della Relatività Generale stessa.
We investigate some foundational aspects of General Relativity from an epistemological point of view. We stress that speaking of time when or space where dynamics take place does not make any sense. General Relativity, in fact, states the identification between space-time, which is a metric manifold and then a priori non dynamical, and matter, which satisfies some differential equations and then it is dynamical, thus establishing the non separability between space-time and matter. This distinguishes General Relativity from Newton's Mechanics, where space and time are instead absolute and then they can be separated from matter and motion. This implies a loss of physical significance of local coordinates. The intrinsic calculus on manifolds, as well as all approaches of global nature, which are independent from the choice or the change of local coordinates, are then suitable for the description of this theory and they represent the most fundamental mathematical inheritance of General Relativity itself.
