This is the first part of a paper devoted to an elementary treatment of a few basic forms of laws of large numbers. In order to make the subject accessible to the wide audience of the ``Bollettino'', the author provides, in this part, a summery of the basic elements of the theory of probability, which lead to a constructive definition of probability distribution of a sequence of events, together with some historical information on the origin of the laws of large numbers. The presentation and discussion of some of the most important laws of large number are deferred to the second part of the article.
