La ricerca matematica in Africa subsahariana: una necessità per lo sviluppo

In contradiction with the common understanding which states that the only important things to support in poor African countries are agricultural and medical research, we argue that mathematical research is also very important. We explain why mathematical research is definitely necessary for mathematical education (training of school teachers), technical development (training of engineers) and democracy: international negotiations involve more and more mathematical expertise; each country must have its proper expertise. The paper gives some information of the actual development of mathematical research in some places in Africa (mostly western and central Africa) and describes the work of few international organisms in this continent.
